GWLAD Forges Lifelong Friendships with Czechs
As part of a very successful trans-European partnership between the GWLAD project, led by the School of Lifelong Learning, Bangor University, and Bridge to Education in the Czech Republic there have been a number of exchange visits between the 2 countries.
On Friday 23rd November the Czechs came over to attend the GWLAD partnership final conference at Y Galeri, Caernarfon. The conference was arranged to share the findings of the project with other organisations in north Wales and was attended by over 100 people.
On Saturday they visited Croesor where they were shown some interesting community projects that have been created by the villagers like the open-air swimming pool and the café. They then had a pleasant hour wondering around Portmeirion marvelling at the architecture of the village. To top off a wonderful day they spent the evening eating, drinking and sharing experiences with the locals at Tafar y Fic, Llithfaen and a group of people from Capel Curig and its surrounding communities who have been part of the GWLAD project. The evening ended in the sharing of traditional songs as the Czechs had brought with them a fiddle and guitar to raise the roof with stirring folk songs whilst the Welsh replied with a rendition of classic Welsh tunes. One of the local men said “it has been one of the best evenings in the Fic in many years and a pleasure to have met the Czechs.”
The rest of their stay was spent at the University and visiting other organisations in Gwynedd and Ynys Mon learning about the way things are done here.
Dr. Brec’hed Piette, director of the GWLAD project, and head of Lifelong Learning, Bangor University said:
‘Through the GWLAD project we have built up a very valuable partnership with our Czech colleagues. They are involved in lifelong learning activities very similar to ours, and we have welcomed the opportunity of sharing good practice between the two organisations. We hope to develop other shared work in future projects.’
The project has been part-funded through ESF EQUAL 2 without which the work would not have been possible.
